For many people, the Algarve is all about summer sunshine and busy beaches. But if you ask us, one of the best times to visit Castro Marim is when the summer crowds have gone home. From October through to April, this beautiful corner of the Eastern Algarve slows down. Life becomes more relaxed, the roads are quieter, and you'll have more time to enjoy everything the area has to offer. Better Value Travelling outside school holidays often means lower flight prices, more competitive car hire rates and excellent value accommodation. For anyone who has flexibility with their travel dates, it's well worth comparing prices between peak season and November, February or March. The savings can be significant The Beaches Feel Almost Private The Eastern Algarve is famous for its long stretches of golden sand. During the off season you'll often find yourself sharing the beach with only a handful of other people. Praia Verde, Manta Rota and Monte Gordo are wonderful for long walks, and there's something very relaxing about hearing nothing but the waves and the occasional fisherman heading out to sea. Don't forget to bring a light jacket though – once the sun starts to set, the evenings can become quite cool. Explore Historic Castro Marim Without the heat of midsummer, it's the perfect time to wander around Castro Marim itself. The medieval castle overlooks the River Guadiana and offers spectacular views across Portugal and into neighbouring Spain. The whitewashed streets, traditional cafés and relaxed atmosphere make it easy to spend an afternoon simply exploring at your own pace. Tavira is Even More Relaxed Tavira has always been one of our favourite towns in the Algarve. In the quieter months you can wander through the cobbled streets, browse the independent shops and enjoy a coffee in one of the many cafés without feeling rushed. It's also much easier to find parking and you'll have more opportunity to chat with local shop owners and restaurant staff, who often have a little more time to recommend their favourite dishes. Nature at its Best The Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Nature Reserve is a hidden treasure during the quieter months. Autumn and spring are especially rewarding for birdwatchers, with flamingos, spoonbills and many migratory birds filling the salt marshes. Even in winter, the reserve remains peaceful and full of wildlife. Bring a pair of binoculars if you have them—you'll be surprised how much there is to see. Great food without the queues Off season is when many restaurants return to serving mostly local customers. You'll still find freshly grilled fish, traditional Portuguese dishes and delicious regional desserts, but without the summer queues. Meals become something to savour rather than rush, and you'll often have the chance to chat with the owners or receive recommendations for seasonal specialities. Perfect for Walking and Cycling The cooler temperatures make outdoor activities much more enjoyable than during the height of summer. Whether you're exploring country lanes, cycling towards Vila Real de Santo António, or walking through the salt marshes, you'll appreciate the comfortable weather and peaceful surroundings. Experience the Real Algarve Perhaps the biggest attraction of visiting Castro Marim and Eastern Algarve outside of the main holiday season is experiencing everyday life. The weekly markets continue, cafés are filled with local conversations, and the pace of life feels wonderfully unhurried. It's an opportunity to enjoy the Algarve as residents do, rather than simply as a holiday destination. If you're looking for winter sunshine, spring flowers, or simply a peaceful escape, Castro Marim offers a different kind of holiday—one that's less about rushing from place to place and more about enjoying the simple pleasures of good food, beautiful scenery and genuine Portuguese hospitality. Stay at Drumlin Villa Drumlin Villa is ideally located just a few minutes from Castro Marim, giving you the best of both worlds. Spend your days exploring the beaches, nature reserve and historic villages of the Eastern Algarve, then return to the peace and comfort of your own private villa. Off-season stays are perfect for couples, golfers, walkers, cyclists and anyone looking to escape colder weather without the crowds of peak summer. With Spain only a short drive away, you can even enjoy two countries in one holiday. Whether you're planning a week of sightseeing or simply looking for somewhere to unwind with a good book and a glass of Portuguese wine, Drumlin Villa makes an ideal base for discovering this beautiful part of the Algarve. We'd love to welcome you and help you experience why so many of our guests return to the Eastern Algarve—not just in summer, but throughout the year. Sometimes, the best time to visit isn't during the busiest months at all. |
