One of the best ways to explore the Eastern Algarve is by car. While there are excellent trains and buses connecting many of the larger towns, having your own vehicle allows you to discover quiet beaches, charming villages and hidden gems that many visitors never see. If it's your first time driving in Portugal, don't worry. Most of our guests find it easy and soon settle into the relaxed pace of driving here. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your journey. Driving is on the Right
In Portugal, you'll drive on the right-hand side of the road. If you're visiting from Ireland or the UK, this may feel unfamiliar at first, but most people adjust surprisingly quickly. Take your time when leaving the airport or your accommodation, and remember that roundabouts circulate anti-clockwise. Speed Limits Unless road signs indicate otherwise, the general speed limits are: - Motorways: 120 km/h - Main roads: 90 km/h - Built-up areas: 50 km/h Portugal has plenty of speed cameras, so it's always worth sticking to the posted limits. Toll Roads Some motorways in Portugal are toll roads. The A22 is now toll free and is our preferred route from Faro to Drumlin Villa, If you're hiring a car, ask the rental company whether the vehicle is fitted with an electronic toll device. Many rental companies offer this service, making payment simple and avoiding unexpected charges later. For many journeys around the Eastern Algarve, you'll also find the EN125, which runs alongside the motorway and is free to use. Parking Parking is generally straightforward throughout the Eastern Algarve. Many beaches and towns have free parking, although the busiest locations can fill up during July and August. Arriving a little earlier in the day usually makes finding a space much easier. Always check local parking signs and avoid parking where yellow lines are marked. Fuel Stations Petrol stations are easy to find, particularly along the EN125 and in larger towns. Most accept credit and debit cards, and many are open late or operate 24 hours a day. Explore the Scenic Roads While the motorway is useful for longer journeys, we often recommend taking the quieter inland roads whenever you have time. You'll pass orange groves, olive trees, traditional villages and beautiful countryside that many visitors never experience. Sometimes the journey becomes just as memorable as the destination. Courtesy Goes a Long Way Portuguese drivers are generally patient and courteous. Use your indicators, allow others to merge when appropriate and enjoy the relaxed pace. Driving here is far less stressful than in many larger European cities. Enjoy the Freedom One of the greatest pleasures of staying at Drumlin Villa is being able to head off each morning and discover somewhere new. Whether it's a hidden beach, a local market, a traditional restaurant or a quiet village you've never heard of, having a car gives you the freedom to experience the Algarve at your own pace. Drive safely, take your time and enjoy every mile of your holiday. |
